Kimba Likes Catchphrase Lexicon!

Kia Kaha
Kia Kaha is Maori for “Be strong”.
Since the Christchurch earthquakes, this phrase has taken on a special poignancy as the staunch and stoic character of Cantabrians has been well and truly put to the test.

Fill your boots
The etymology of Fill Your Boots comes from pirate days when they would literally fill their boots with booty (see what I did there?) to carry as much loot as possible.
Nowadays, it means “be my guest” and “get stuck in”.
“Can I have a piece of cake, please?”
“Mate – fill your boots!”

That really rips my nightie
I borrowed this one from the lovely Melinda, one of my Gorgeous Girls.
It is a much more ladylike way of saying “Well, that pisses me off!”

Always bet on Black
I am a passionate supporter of the All Blacks, New Zealand’s national rugby team.
Clearly, one should always bet on Black!
It was a looooong time between drinks, baby.

O for Awesome
In 1992, David Tua, a former New Zealand professional heavyweight boxer, was on Wheel of Fortune. The story goes that he asked for an “O for Awesome” and thus, a legend was born!
It’s entirely possible he actually said “O for Olsen” (a family friend) or O for Ocean. But let’s not let that get in the way of an O for Awesome tale!

Retro Cute
I’m a bit of a sucker for some vintage glamour and some retro cute works for me too.
It describes vintage with a modern twist to a tee.
How retro cute is this toaster?

Gorgeous Girls
The Gorgeous Girls are my besties.
I luff them very much.

Sweet as
Excellent Kiwi slang and very flexible in its usage.
You can use it instead of “great”, as in “My night out was sweet as”.
It can also be used in place of “yes please”.
“Want a beer, bro?”
“Sweet as!”
Believed to be descended from “good as gold” and frequently seen in the company of “bro”.

Chocolate Fish Award
New Zealanders love chocolate covered marshmallow. Especially the good old Chocolate Fish!
The Chocolate Fish Award* is given to people who have made an extra special effort and made me particularly happy.
Note, this is as frequently sarcastic as it is sweet – but always genuine!
* Actual chocolate fish not awarded. Very hard to get hold of, and I’m not good at sharing my chocolate covered marshmallow treats!

Husbeyond
This is Kimba for “husband”. The Welshman is far and beyond the usual expectations of a husband, so he’s my “husbeyond”. I’m a very lucky girl. x
