Thankful Thursday : Holidays and Friends

Thankful Thursday : Holidays and Friends

Just hanging out with the locals

What am I thankful for this Thursday?  Nice of you to ask!

I’m thankful for the school holidays.  I know many people are ready for school to start again right about, oh, say, now, but I’m really enjoying our school holidays.

We had a few days away at Eagle Reach Eco Resort (Barrington Tops, Maitland, Morpeth kind of area), just between Xmas and the New Year.  We yabbied, ate, rested, watched movies, took numerous (nudie!) spas on the verandah overlooking the amazing valley view, reclined, enjoyed the view, played bocce and thankfully not too many games of Uno, slept, enjoyed afternoon cocktails, fished, walked, explored, relaxed and got friendly with some local kangaroos.

The plan for the rest of the school holidays has been for Boyo to attend OOSH Vacation Care at his primary school, whilst I work for two long days per week instead of my usual four short days.  This has worked really well for our family, and Boyo was disappointed that it was a Mummy day and not an OOSH day this morning!  I’m trying not to take it personally.

On our days off, we’ve been doing quite a bit more of that relaxing stuff, catching up with friends and enjoying each other’s company.  A seven year old is an excellent companion – he likes to have a chat, is an excellent stylist if we go shopping, and is quite good at cleaning up after himself.  Doesn’t mean he does it, but he is quite good at it!

I’m looking forward to “normal” life recommencing, but I have really enjoyed these school holidays.

One of the other fantastic things about school holidays is friends.  Especially old friends who knew you a dress size or two ago, and through the bad outfits of the 90s, and still love you.  Got a fantastic phone call this morning from my BFF, aka my Maid of Honour, who announced her family are coming to Sydney soon – like Monday!  They’re staying in a Darling Harbour hotel for three nights.  Possibly for the best, as they are nightowls and we’re early birds.  Our spare room seems very spacious, until you try to fit four people into it.

The plan is to catch up for dinner on Monday, a Powerhouse trip on Wednesday, maybe dinner on Wednesday night at our favourite local, the Three Weeds, and Australia Day with four Kiwis, one Welshman and two Australians –  their baby and my Boyo!  I’m sure we’ll be found at the fabulous Darling Quarter playground once or twice too.  I call that O for Awesome!

But wait, there’s more!  On Saturday, we’re driving to Newcastle for the weekend, staying at a nice harbourside hotel, and catching up with some lovely friends and their gorgeous children.  We’ve been to Newcastle twice to visit them, but have never actually visited Newcastle per se.  Looking forward to it, but most excited about seeing such lovely people again.

So there you have it!  This Thursday, I’m thankful for holidays and friends.  Holidays with friends?  Even better!

A fashion moment to treasure

A fashion moment to treasure

I recently spent a few days with my BFF, the woman who taught me how to fake my first ID, and who has had my back since the time I forgot to do up my bodysuit, and it was dangling outside my red paper bag jeans.   In a nightclub.  Alcohol may have been involved.  Hey, it was the 90s!  We became Women of the 90s together, and both stood up as Maid of Honour at our weddings.

We hadn’t managed to spend much time together in the intervening years – a little matter of world travel, babies, mortgages, marriages, living in different countries and then different states.

However, I could not let the occasion of her 40th birthday (even though she looks about 32, if that!) pass us by.  I flew down to Melbourne to spend a few days with her lovely family, and indulge in a couple of our favourite pastimes – cafes, shopping, girly night out and talking, talking, talking!

The fashion moment that I will treasure forever is the few hours we managed to snatch (thanks so much, Granny, for the babysitting!) to hit the shops!  We laughed, we shopped, we reminisced, we ate, we shopped a bit more …  fabulous!

My BFF has a three month old baby and needed an outfit to wear for a girly night out.  It had been a while since she’d had an opportunity to dress up and hit the tiles!  I was delighted to help out!   We looked and looked and looked.  She patiently tried on dress after dress, belt after belt, and didn’t even let me see her rolling her eyes once!

Finally, we walked out of the shops with a gorgeous 50s esque blush nude lined lace flippy frock from Jacqui E, worn with gorgeous blush nude (very uncomfortable as it turned out!) Wittner heels, a navy woven belt and the most divinely blinged up clutch from Forever New, plus a brand new Simone Perele bra.

I provided entertainment by doing a 5 minute accessory dash, throwing a faux fur over one shoulder, as I simultaneously wore a pillbox and cloche hat, whilst searching for an evening bag!  Most of the Forever New clientele were young enough to be our offspring, if we hadn’t waited until our 30s to procreate.  They thought we (OK, me!) were bonkers!

I will treasure this fashion moment forever.  What more could you ask for?  Hanging out with my BFF, helping her look even more gorgeous, laughter and love.  That’s O for Awesome, Lana!

Oh, and the other little fashion moment I will treasure?  The lovely girl in one of the changing rooms who asked me for my card as she thought I was a stylist!
