Jai Ho! Linda’s Bollywood Extravaganza

Jai Ho! Linda’s Bollywood Extravaganza

One of the Gorgeous Girls, Linda, recently celebrated her 40th birthday.  In true Linda style, this involved elaborate costumes, the most divine hand made invitations, more food and alcohol than probably strictly necessary, over 100 friends getting their party on and a whole heap of fun!  I heard a rumour that the boys in blue even paid a 4am visit.

The piece de resistance was the Bollywood flash mob performed by nine friends, including moi.  One Champagne-fuelled Xmas gathering of the Gorgeous Girls found us all gathering again in January to learn an intricate Bollywood flash mob dance, choreographed by the fabulous Tracy.

We practised our little hearts out and finally the day of the event loomed.  I’m sure I wasn’t the only one on edge all. day. long!

I know you’re dying to see the video.  Of course you are, you’re only human!

Thanks to the truly fabulous Gorgeous Girl Melinda who got Allison and I sorted with the intricate pleating and draping of our saris, and made me turn my hair into a big old bouffant!

A big Jai Ho to Lisa, sister of the birthday girl, who supplied many of the saris, costumes, decorative ribbon and jewellery; designed the most amazing Ganesh chalk drawing for the wall, was a Jai Ho Girl and sorted the playlist to boot!

It was truly a night to remember!

Happy, happy birthday, Linda!  You were the consummate hostess, totally rocked your two fabulous outfits and absolutely pwned Chris on air guitar!  I’m very proud to call you my friend.  Love you lots and here’s to the next 40 years!

Name my new baby!

Name my new baby!

Ta da!  A little announcement!

My baby has been named!  Let me introduce Betsey Bicycle, my new bestie.

Now, if only it would stop raining long enough for a family bike ride and picnic.

+++++++++++++++++++

Let me introduce you to a very special girl who has recently come into my life.  She’s my new baby and I love her very much.  Isn’t she just gorgeous!

My new baby!

Sadly, the poor darling currently remains nameless.  Surely this sad state of affairs can’t go on!

Her model name is Dutchess (yes, spelt incorrectly) so I am considering Duchess.  My charming brother Brett suggested the Duchess of Pork, which was swiftly ignored.  My mother has reminded me that she is almost the same colour as one of my first loves, my 1960 Morris Minor.

Won’t you please help a girl out and give her a name?  Suggestions gratefully received!

Framed! DIY Hair Accessory Storage

Framed! DIY Hair Accessory Storage

Look what I made!  I made myself a jewellery display stand in the Xmas holidays, and I use it every day to store and display favourite pieces.

I decided my next project should be a DIY hair acessories storage solution to store and display my favourite hair accessories.  They’re so pretty that it seems a shame to keep them in a box.

I started with a utilitarian (read ugly) corkboard from Officeworks.  It cost about $10.

The next step for my DIY hair accessories storage project was choosing some pretty ribbon from my sewing box to disguise the less than attractive plastic frame, and attaching it.  I used some sticky tape to hold it in place whilst I was working out the placement, and my hot glue gun to affix the ribbon more firmly.

The final step was attaching some pretty elastic and arranging
the push pins to hold some of my favourite hair accessories.

15 minutes or so later and voila!  I’ve got the perfect spot on the wall of my teeny tiny walk in wardrobe to hang this little pretty.

I would love to hear how you store your accessories.  Do you think you’d give this a go?

Black Out

Black Out

Black Rockport wedges, black fishnets, black Portmans silk dress

I’m a big fan of Fox in Flats, the fabulous website for foxy mamas who wish to navigate motherhood in style.  Tips and information on how to dress for occasions like the school run, or breastfeeding; how to filter fashion trends for mums who don’t want to be mumsy; what to pack for a hospital stay, what you need for a flight and other such fabulous stuff as the Fox in Flats’ patented Style Dares.

The deal with a Style Dare is that you follow the rules of the week and share the evidence via a photograph on the social media of your choice!

Ah, how I love the Style Dares!  Now, I love clothes and makeup and all the girly accoutrements that go along with getting dressed every day, but having a Style Dare to kickstart your day is so much fun!

Don't know why I didn't bust this one out

I’ve participated in many of the huge list of dares.  Some of my favourites have been a little less than challenging for a girl who wears makeup every day, likes to dress in a vintage inspired manner, loves colour and pattern and accessorising and thrifting!

However …

The latest Style Dare has been Blackout – wear black clothes for a week, with no more than 10% of your look being a colour.  I could have worn a different vintage cocktail hat for a week straight or worn three different colours every single day.  I’m not afraid to admit that wearing black for a week nearly beat me!

I own very few black clothes so this presented quite the challenge for me.  I really had to plumb the depths of my wardrobe, and get creative. One particularly hot day spent running errands, I had to resort to black shoes, black lingerie, onyx earrings and a black hairbow with a colourful summer frock!

I learnt a few things from the Blackout Style Dare.  Namely that whilst I don’t own many black clothes, the black items in my wardrobe are there because they’ve earned their place.  It might be a very flattering cut, beautiful silk fabric or a timeless classic.  I learnt that most of the black items I own are best suited to a day in the office.  I also discovered just how many black and white striped items I own!  I do love a stripe.

Have you been participating in the Fox in Flats’ Style Dares?  Which ones did you enjoy the most or find the most challenging?

Thankful Thursday – Kia Kaha

Thankful Thursday – Kia Kaha

I spent the first 22 years of my life in Christchurch, New Zealand, that most English of cities in the Antipodes.  I’m a fifth generation dyed-in-the-wool one eyed Cantabrian.  In a few short years, I will have spent equal parts of my life living in Australia and New Zealand, and then Australia will gradually edge ahead.  But Christchurch will always be my “home”.

The River Avon runs through the centre of the city, under the Bridge of Remembrance.  My maternal great great grandfather, George Witty, was a politician who passed a law making the Avon a sanctuary for ducks.  The original greenie, you might think?  Nope, he was a duck hunter!  He was the fourth owner of  ”Avonhead”, which was one of the first properties built in 1850, after the arrival of the first fleet.  The suburb Avonhead takes its name from this property.

~

My beautiful city is known for its heritage buildings, like the Museum, the Arts Centre on the site of the original University, the Botanic Gardens and Christchurch Cathedral, smack bang in the centre of the iconic square.  If you’ve ever been to Adelaide, you’ll feel right at home in Christchurch, as Adelaide was built on the same city plan.

That was before Christchurch turned into Shaky Town following the big earthquake on 4 September 2010.  Boyo and I visited family in Christchurch in January 2011 and we were deeply saddened by the damage we could see, but heartily cheered by all the repair and restoration work we could see going on, invigorating the economy and making my beloved city beautiful again.

The Bridge of Remembrance

Until Mother Nature turned into a bitch again, and the big shake of 22 February 2011 occurred.  185 people lost their lives and the CBD is still cordoned off a year later.  Many houses were destroyed and entire suburbs stand as virtual ghost towns as people pack up what possessions they have left and move away.

My grandparents’ house, built by my grandfather when he was 17 and working with his father as a relocator of houses, still stands, yet liquefaction has hit them hard.  Granddad has lost two mobility scooters to the mountains of silt that appear after every decent jolt, and they have been helped many times by the Farmy Army and the Student Army, who arrive with bobcats, shovels and buckets to carry away the mountains of silt.

So, what am I thankful for?  On the face of it, there doesn’t seem much to be particularly cheery about.  What I am grateful for is that all my immediate family are safe and sound.  Houses have been lost but everyone is still alive.  The future is uncertain and my Grandma compares it to living in a war zone and tells me that she’s happy so long as she has power and a flushing toilet.  It’s the little things in life, isn’t it!

I haven’t been back to Christchurch since the Big One hit.  I adore my city but I’m too scared to take Boyo there.  I struggle with this, but the words of my brave and wise Grandma ring in my ear.  ”Please don’t come and visit us – I have enough people to worry about as it is, and I know you’re safe in Sydney.”

Grandma and Boyo, January 2011

Kia Kaha is a Maori term used by all New Zealanders – Maori and Pakeha – and it translates as “Stay Strong”.  It has been used widely in New Zealand and perfectly sums up the stoic and staunch Cantabrian spirit.  Kia kaha, Christchurch.  Kia kaha. This Thursday, I’m thankful that my family are safe.  What are you thankful for?

I’m playing along with Kate Says Stuff.   Why don’t you play along too?

Balearic Love by BECCA

Balearic Love by BECCA

BECCA Balearic Love Collection

I am such a big fan of BECCA Cosmetics that my BECCA client card has written across the top “VIP – LOVES BECCA!”.

BECCA taught me to love my skin.  I simply adore their Luminous Skin Colour SPF 25+.  I was always wary of a tinted moisturiser but wearing a tinted moisturiser with concealer and mineral powder on the bits that need extra coverage is the way to go.  Full coverage makeup can be ageing and freckles are beautiful!  For the less than beautiful pigmentation and dark circles, BECCA’s Compact Concealer with its Medium and Extra Coverage combo is not only fantastic but has the biggest colour range I’ve ever seen.

Luminous Skin Colour SPF 25+

I was lucky enough to have my makeup done today by the lovely Megan at BECCA David Jones Elizabeth Street, to showcase the new Balearic Love range.  Oh, it’s so pretty and glamorous!

As BECCA says -

BALEARIC LOVE COLLECTION

Stolen glances with an enigmatic stranger, a forbidden embrace in the fading sunlight; this season BECCA invites you to dream of distant shores and unguarded temptation with the Balearic Love Collection.

Eyes are undeniably sexy, shaded in rich, sensuous hues of bronze, plum and violet while lips are nude with a soft hint of pink. A warmed complexion is sculpted by natural matte bronze for shape and definition.

Megan prepped my skin with the gorgeous new Radiance Primer, followed by Cashmere Luminous Skin Colour SPF 25+.  She concealed with Latte Compact Concealer and added a little more coverage with Bliss Boudoir Mineral Powder Foundation.

Before - Clean skin with just Radiance Primer

My eyes had Romanticism Eye Tint patted on, then set with Atlas pale shade from the Balearic Love palette.  Then they were shaded with Romal and Marcella, the bronze and plum tones from the palette, and further defined with Cabrera Line and Define Pencil.  The eyes were finished with lashings of the excellent BECCA tubing Ultimate Mascara and Medium brow powder for defining a bold brow.

My cheeks were shaded with the bronze tones of Bolero Mineral Powder Blush, and my face was contoured with Duende Mineral Bronzing Powder.  My lips were defined with Fondant Lip Liner Pencil and finished with the prettiest pink Valentina Sheer Tint Lip Colour.

I was really happy with the potential the Balearic Love collection provided, especially the Balearic Love palette, whose beautiful colours can be used to create a subtle shimmery eye, a defined classic eye or a gorgeous smokey eye, all in my favourite jewel tones of bronze and purple and subtle gold.

After - Phew, looking much better!

Do you love makeup as much as I do?  Are you a BECCA fan?  What is your favourite makeup brand?

Sweet Tweet

Sweet Tweet

People who don’t “do Twitter” don’t get Twitter.  I get that it appears to be a very strange thing, but I’m a big Twitter fan and here’s why!

Twitter has enabled me to make connections and new friends with lots of lovely people.  For example, I met the lovely Andrea from the fabulous website Fox in Flats, who encouraged me to blog and even let me guest post!  She tweets as @FoxinFlats.

I’ve participated in challenges and dares, such as the Fox in Flats patented Style Dares, and Fat Mum Slim’s Photo Challenges, who tweets as @FatMumSlim.

I’ve had help deciding which dress to wear on date night, I’ve gained insight into campaigns to make the world a better place.  I’ve laughed, chortled, sniggered and giggled.  I’ve grieved, cried and yearned.  I’ve educated, shared and learned.  I’ve been charmed, gladdened and touched.  Occasionally, I’ve been saddened, disappointed and bored.

I was delighted to read this lovely post by the adorable She’s Sonic, who tweets as @ShesSonic, which kinda sums it all up, bless her little cotton socks!  Check it out!
